Has been to milwaukee to meet voters, some of whom use some strong language. welcome to milwaukee, the home of cheese curds, beer and this week, the debate for the next republican presidential candidate. i m here because i want to figure out how social media could already be shaping next year s election. to figure out what s happening online in us politics, i ve been running undercover accounts belonging to five fake characters. they reflect views from across the political spectrum in the us and are based on data gathered by the pew research center. i gave each of them a profile on instagram, facebook, tiktok, youtube and twitter. theyjust like and follow content, they don t comment or message. they re called faith and flag larry, populist right britney, apolitical sideliner gabriela, democratic mainstay michael and progressive left emma. so far, i ve only been able to see what my undercover accounts are recommended, exposed to and targeted
These echo chambers. and it s interesting, i ve spoken quite a lot about populist right britney, but progressive left emma, she s also had some quite extreme stuff. it s tended towards. she has stuff about climate and abortion and racism, but a lot of the stuff that she s looking at can use viole nt rhetoric. it s often name and shame, target individuals and stuff like that. less overtly conspiratorial, but she s absolutely in an echo chamber in the same way that populist britney is. what s most interesting and one of our favourites on americast is gabriella because she s our apolitical voter and we really wanted to see who targets her because she s not interested in politics at all. the main thing that she s liked that s a political issue is stuff around the cost of living. she wants to know how to save money on her groceries. she wants to know lots about her local area. she s from miami. and we ve really noticed in the past couple of weeks in particular that she s starting to get tho
