jussie justices are considering a 2018 mississippi law that bans abortions 15 weeks after conception. now, it s been blocked by two federal courts, but if it is upheld by the conservative court, the impact could be profound. it could trigger similar laws limiting access to abortion in several other states. we re going to get to cnn justice correspondent jessica schneider who is live outside the supreme court. jessica, what did we hear today? reporter: questioning from all six jussie smolletts here indicates they could uphold this mississippi abortion law that practically bans all abortions at 15 weeks with limited exceptions. the question is how far they would go. the chief justice john roberts indicated this law itself might be okay at 15 weeks, but that would alter the landscape of the abortion law throughout the country, but it wouldn t completely let states ban abortion. the other five justices, however, seemed to cast doubt on the fact that roe v. wade might be upheld.
jean mancini will be joining us live. john: we go to our chief legal couldn t respondent who is at the steps of the supreme court arguments wrapped up a short-term go. the protests continue. good afternoon, shannon. we understand there were some arrests not far from us not short time ago. inside the court, there were heated moments as well. a big focus on the concept of precedence. do they stand because shark one can the supreme court overruled him? would they be eligible at this point to be overturned or should they be left alone as super precedents as they are often called? glad of that conversation conversation today and it sounde conservative justice would be in support of the mississippi law which bans after 15 weeks. most of them. there are some exceptions. it s something to be willing to uphold the law. whether they would be taking chunks out of roe or casey, we just don t know where they re going to land. chief justice roberts is the critical vote year and he brou
parenthood versus casey. the potential to overturn 50 years of precedent weighed heavily on today s proceedings, as mississippi argued that the court s 1973 roe decision was, quote, egregiously wrong and a poison on the law. the conservative justices in the majority didn t all signal an outright willingness to completely overturn roe. but many of their comments suggested a willingness to weaken it perhaps substantially. let s listen to justice kavanaugh s line of questioning with mississippi solicitor general, many believe a crucial vote in this case given his previous defense of roe as precedent on precedent. you re not arguing that the court somehow has the authority to itself prohibit abortion or that this court has the authority to order the states to prohibit abortion, as i understand it, correct? correct, your honor. as i understand it, you re arguing that the constitution s silent and, therefore, neutral on the question of abortion? in other words that the consti
