Frank, what do you see as sarah sanders legacy. what market did she play on the press secretary role? she has a lot of areas where she s left a mark and it s not a great one. she has, as you indicated with those clips, lied on behalf the the president. not only what she said about the fbi, but she lied, for example, when she said the president promoted the lie, anyway, that when she said that former president obama had authorized wiretaps on president trump. she denieded the payment to stormy daniels. probably her greatest legacy, though, is going to be her public antipathy toward the press but also essential cancelling the dadely briefing. i was a white house correspond for eight years, that daily
Had the opportunity to serve my country and particularly to work for this president. he has accomplished so much in these two and half years. it s truly been something i will treasure forever. i can tell you i just got a text about 15 minutes ago from a white house official. she called sanders a consummate professional, someone who loves her country, and all the people including the people with whom she disagrees very strongly politically. the president said on twitter, someone he called a very talented person. sarah sanders stepping down. dana, back to you. dana: thank you. we will spend a few minutes talking about it. this is a momentous thing when they press secretary leaves in a new one comes in. it s been a different role than in the past than the last little bit. one thing you can say, jesse, she was one of the trusted advisors of the president. in addition to doing press secretary role, she is somebody who uses a counselor.
Well for them. that was both a good political strategy and good for the country. is that not part of the problem here for trump which is that the whole operation just in terms of trump s self interest is the lack of a coherent strategy. they re not doing this in a rigorous, thoughtful way. it s just indiscriminate flailing. there s a couple norms breaking down. one is the press secretary role. the other is the white house counsel itself which used to represent the office of the president institutionally and now representing the president and his personal capacity whether there are nuances there. but clearly i heard somebody say this weekend a wonderful line, there s the west wing and then there s donald trump. and one of the mysteries of the era to me is why he doesn t do what is self evidently in his own interest.
Matters into his own hands here and as you all said earlier, so telling reince priebus, chief of staff, not involved in this decision at all s one thing that is shaking people inside the white house today is, this is the second time in three days someone who is an incredibly loyal soldier, loyal employee, supporter of this president, has been sort of disrespected. jeff sessions of course, the attorney general earlier this week and now sean spicer. it does send a message and raise a question to people, gosh, in this can happen to them, what about me? i do think, your point who leaves his spicer might be interesting. but the interesting thing here also. sean spicer was saying, just a month or so ago that he is going to be in charge of picking his own successor. he was accepting the fact he would not be at the press podium every day. accepting the fact this would not be the traditional press
Campaign, our winning campaign, i would remind folks and both of those men went out and fought hard every single time. neither one of them shied away from the tough days or the brutal news cycles that we had and anthony s not going to shy away. look, anthony very much, we ve seen this from watching cnn, where he sits down and will have very substantive, in depth, policy-oriented conversations with hosts on this network where he can actually sit down and dive into those things and really have a unique way of communicating the president s message, and look, he s going to have his own style. i don t think it s really there s a way to compare when you go from, say, one person who might be a press secretary and another person who s a communications director. we still haven t heard from the white house what the exact structure is going to be, if there s going to be a promotion of sarah huckabee sanders or if they re going toods something else for the actual press secretary role but the one
