President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (File photo) MANILA - President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has picked his personal physician, Dr. Samuel Zacate, as director-general of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Malacanang announced Wednesday. Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles announced Zacate's appointment in a Palace press briefing. Zacate is a known public health advocate with years of expertise in medicine and medical consultancy in other government units and offices, including the Public Attorney's Office, Presidential Security Group Hospital (2009-2022), among others. Prior to his appointment, Zacate was a diplomate of the Philippine Society for Venereology and a fellow of the International College of Surgeons. A member of the country’s vaccine expert panel (VEP) is seeing President Duterte’s decision to receive the Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine as a boon for the government’s vaccination program, saying it would encourage more people to get themselves vaccinated.
Dr. Rontgene Solante, chief of the Adult Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine unit of San Lazaro Hospital, said President Duterte’s gesture could further boost the government’s initiative to inoculate 70 to 80 million Filipinos by end of the year to achieve herd immunity.
