republican party, i don t see, often, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle. they may be the elected representatives. but 70% of this country wants common sense things like roe v. wade. 70% of the country or more actually, 80 plus percent of nra members want common sense gun safety laws. i could go through all of these things, capping prescription drugs, which raphael warnock helped lead the $35 prerinse for insulin the majority of republicans want that. the child tax credit, wildly popular with republicans. so, we as americans, the lines that divide us in congress, are not the lines that divide us in this nation. in fact, we have more ties that bind us then lines that divide us. and so this is a moment in america where i, for one, want the democratic party to begin to claim where most of america is on these issues. and i think that getting too obsessed with the members that you mentioned undermines the larger mission in this country, which is not just to herald the

time. yeah. yes. you are going to have him as a compatriot in your caucus. but on the other side you are going to have the entrance of someone like j.d. vance. ron johnson got reelected. josh hawley is still there. when you talk about moderating the republican party, the idea that the republican party is facing a test, are you confident that lessons will be learned here? is there anything that people like you and raphael warnock can do to help moderate or show the republican party the light, as it were? when i think of the republican party, i don t see, often, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle. they may be the elected representatives. but 70% of this country wants common sense things like roe v. wade. 70% of the country or more actually, 80 plus percent of nra members want common sense gun safety laws. i could go through all of these things, capping prescription drugs, which raphael warnock helped lead the $35 prerinse for insulin the majority of republicans want t

but, why this republican frenzy for identity regulation now? it s not the individual identity, it s the collective identity of america. america s more diverse, and more accepting than it s ever been, and that is the identity that republicans want to suppress. it made me think of the fight around americas historical identity, that it s happening right now in virginia, at the home of america s fourth president james madison, montpelier. since 2018, montpelier had been a radical idea, it was run with active input from the descendants of its slave people who lived there, until they were essentially booted last month. some of the defendants are descended from both the enslaved and the enslavers. james french is the chair of the montpelier descendants committee, and his defense descended from both enslaved people and enslavers. here s what he told me on my washington post broadcast, on how he views the true history of the founding fathers.

exhausted and tired of seeing both my republican colleagues use the guise of christiana the, to allow for hatred and marginalizing people. and also to use prerinse, the idea that they re speaking on behalf of white suburban parents, as a way to marginalize, it is not fair. so, for all of us who feel the way that i do, and there are a lot of us, we know that we are responsible for donald trump being elected president, because not enough of us stood up and said it s not okay. we can t do that anymore. senator mcmorrow, i wonder, have any of your republican colleagues pull you aside, privately, and said anything positive? maybe a attagirl, or keep going? you know, i looked directly at senator theis today, in my speech, and she couldn t even look at me. she turned away from me the entire time, and showed me the

because their strategy is not rooted in morality. you can be incredibly articulate, but they have long since passed the idea of living in the moral reality. and in fact, you can argue that they have never been truly rooted conservatives. the parties have shifted all over the place. but conservatism has never been truly rooted in morality. they want to believe however that they were right. and so the white christian church helped to sustain slavery, the white christian church to help to sustain that neo-slavery after the real slavery had already failed. the white christian church to help to maintain that it was complicit in maine jim crow. all the while, they were able to convince themselves that they were morally grounded. when in fact there was no moral grounding in the movement at all. we missed the mark a little bit when we try to say, if i just explain it better. and so then if the moral argument isn t what s going to
