Transcripts For CSPAN3 Lectures In History Antebellum Social Reformer Lucretia Mott 20240711

Tolerance, temperance, and a number of other social causes of her day. I am going to talk about her, but i am doing a couple other things for you. The premise of this course is the idea that you must understand women reformers in the context of their day. So i am going to trace her personal context, which is important, she was a quaker and i will talk about what that means, but also her social context, social, political and religious contexts, the things that were going on around her. And it is my argument, the city, the domestic second great awakening which i have mentioned, was a part of what helped to radicalize her, contributed to her effectiveness. So both her personal and social contexts are part of this. And i want you to see this as modeling for your own thinking about your own reformers. Each of you is working on a reformer, and i want you to weigh what is in her personal context as a reformer and in her larger context that shapes are issues and effectiveness. Think about it o ....

Transcripts For CSPAN3 The Presidency The Presidency As An Institution 20240712

Which is some kind of a rudimentary indicator of the character of our political system and its volatility. Scarcely more than one third of our chief executives, beginning in the 18th century, have been elected to a second term for one reason or another. Eight have died in office. Four have been assassinated. Five have been elected without popular majorities. Three have been impeached, two of those in the lifetime of many people with us here today. Of all of those numbers, the one i want to emphasize the most is simply the number one. By that i mean that the president is simply one of the 536 elected officials in washington, d. C. Strictly speaking, it is 537, 535 members of congress, and im treating the president and Vice President for this purpose as a single political entity. So the president is one of 536 elected officials. When i reflect on that asymmetry between the one president and 535 other federal elected officials, im re ....

Transcripts For CSPAN3 Lectures In History Laura Watt On Landscape Preservation And National Parks 20240712

Find it where you listen to podcasts. So, today were going to be talking about landscapes and preservation and sort of how preservation unexpectedly changes the places we set aside as parks and protected areas. The intention here is really not only to sort of understand the history of the protective spaces but to make the process more visual, to make it easier to understand not only the history of parks and how they have changed over time but why they have changed over time. We think of some things staying the thing. This changes things. Thats the focus were going to aim at today. And im going to theres often a presumption that Public Ownership is the best way to protect ownership. We see the series on americas parks called americas best idea, that natural spaces that have trails and for hiking and sightseeing and so on are representative of pure pristine nature thats had some boundaries put around it and its been kept the same ....
