7.0-magnitude earthquake hits Philippines

Published: Thursday, January 21, 2021, 18:39 [IST] Manila, Jan 21: An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Ritcher Scale hit 210 km SE of Pondaguitan, Philippines at 12:23 UTC (5:53 pm IST) on Thursday. Earlier on Dec 29th 2020, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the Philippine island of Mindanao on Saturday triggering a brief tsunami warning. The Philippines and Indonesia lie on the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. The most recent major quake disaster to strike the Philippines was in 2013 when a 7.1-magnitude quake left more than 220 people dead and destroyed historic churches in the central islands.

A 7.0-magnitude quake struck at 9:23 p.m. local time (4:23 a.m. Vancouver time) on January 21, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. As the depth of the seismic activity was 95 kilometres (59 miles), the U.S. Tsunami Warning Centre stated that it was not expected to generate a tsunami and, consequently, a tsunami alert was not issued. The epicentre was positioned 211 kilometres (131 miles) southeast of Pondaguitan, Philippines; 231 kilometres (143 miles) east of Caburan, Philippines; and 311 kilometres (193 miles) southeast of Davao, Philippines.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale hit 210 km southeast of Pondaguitan, Philippines, at 12:23 UTC (5:53 pm IST).  According to CNN Philippines, the tremors with Intensity 5 (strong) were felt in General Santos City, Intensity 4 in Davao City, and Intensity 2 in Bislig, Surigao del Sur. The USGS said there was a low likelihood of casualties or damage. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami threat. Deep earthquakes generally cause less damage on the Earth’s surface.   The southern Davao region has been battered by powerful earthquakes set off by local fault lines in recent years.
