On April 5 Kauaʻi rejoined the state’s Safe Travels testing program, which would allow travelers to bypass Hawaiʻi’s mandatory 10-day quarantine with a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours before arriving in the Islands. (It originally opted out in December 2020.)
That means traveling to Kauaʻi is now an option as long as you meet all the requirements of the Safe Travels program, including getting a COVID test from a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified laboratory.
The island has seen very few visitors since March 2020, during the state’s first shutdown. The county has the second-fewest total COVID-19 cases in the state 198, compared to 23,468 on Oʻahu and fewer than 10 active cases as of Monday, thanks, in part, to Kauaʻi’s restrictive travel requirement.

Hawaii Plans For Post-Pandemic Tourism, Starting With Kauai

LIHUE, Kauai Hawaii has released a new blueprint for redefining tourism in the post-COVID-19 era by mitigating community concerns over traffic and overcrowding on Kauai while maintaining the benefits from the state’s dominant industry.
It could dramatically alter the visitor experience on the Garden Island, but the head of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce stressed the need for airlines to be part of the solution by limiting the number of seats sold on flights.
“Polihale is like our home. You don’t go to the bathroom at the same place you sleep or eat off. This place is so sacred. I don’t think people realize the mana that it brings and gives. When you come here it feels like coming home,” Kahale says, as tears well up.
Lineal descendants of the area, now known as Polihale State Park, can trace their ancestry back hundreds of years to this wind-swept, stunningly beautiful region on Kaua‘i’s west side. Sandwiched between the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park and the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility, Polihale has long been a place for native Hawaiians and others to visit to fish, surf, swim or just walk on the two and a half miles of beach within the park.
