people try to take advantage of the fact that some americans aren t comfortable with the kind of conversations and changes that are being sought and when it comes to things like critical race theory, that has been exploited, the idea that people are learning about the origins of the country and some of the sins of the past has been exploited by a number of people who wanted to take political advantage of the fact that they see that there can be political benefits from exploiting some of the changes that have taken place and some of the concerns out there among parents and among people that see change happening very quickly. so we are seeing a backlash. we are seeing the kinds of divisions that king worried about and the kinds of problems that make it very difficult for there to be lasting change and we haven t seen the kind of change that people were talking about in the aftermath of george floyd s death, when we thought there would be policing changes, thought there would be more conv

policing changes since the end of the obama administration. what did that require? tell us, what did you think of that? consent decree is necessary. what happened is the department of justice, the obama administration, when i came into office, they had already begun an investigation and decided that newark needed to be under consent decree police department. an tease are things that have been happening around the country and needs to continue. so we had to work with the justice department. we didn t the first thing that worked is we didn t push it away. we weren t aggressive in saying we didn t want this consent decree. we embraced it and said let s work together and believed that we needed it. that was the first step. we began to change policies and practices by bringing the community and changing use of force policy. changing policies around stop and frisk, changing policies around de-escalation. all of those things are important. we have new policies, over a dozen new policies t
across the country and demand change and get it. so change is coming to the ferguson police department. though all the police departments around have been doing the same thing in terms of treating citizens as revenue sources, brutalizing them and beam are losing their jobs people getting beat up these kind of things. so we have a community in deep pain. that s why they have been able to protest month after month because they are in deep pain. it is unfortunate that a few people, maybe as little as one person comes to the rally that is peaceful except for that shooter. and that colors the whole rally. right. the community didn t want to shoot cops. they don t want anybody killed. and yet the conversation becomes citizen violence instead of policing changes. so this one person changed the whole conversation. it s not fair to the people who have been protesting peacefully
