El proceso en Italia arrancó en 1999 con la denuncia de algunos familiares de desaparecidos, un año después de que se ordenara la detención del dictador chileno Augusto Pinochet tras la investigación del juez español Baltasar Garzón.
La investigación de las desapariciones de italianos en el Chile de Pinochet se remonta a 1998. Veintitrés italianos que vivían en Chile, Bolivia, Perú y Uruguay fueron asesinados en el marco del Plan Cóndor.
