The first scholarly exhibition examining the history of arts and culture in Miami s oldest neighborhood opens at FIU

On May 29, 2021, Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU will present “Place and Purpose: Art Transformation in Coconut Grove.” For decades, Coconut Grove has attracted artists, writers, and musicians. Through a select group of visual artists, the Frost will tell the story of the Grove’s rich history and how the spirit of this community has contributed to the Grove’s reputation as a wellspring of creativity.
Every year the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum features works by students graduating from the Master of Fine Arts program in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts at Florida International University.
This year, the museum is featuring the work of Dianna Grace and Elizaveta Kolesnikova. Grace is informed by immersive spaces and engages in innovative experimentation with materials. Kolesnikova s current work presents Peruvian cultures and traditions. This annual exhibition is a part of the Frost Art Museum s continuing support of FIU s art curriculum.
Experimentation has led me to my current “portals” concept. The energy within my work focuses on movement and space that represent gateways, entrances, or doorways. I am fascinated with the concept of traversing dimensions through openings and creating a moment for the viewer. My sculptural installations consume the viewer using light and shadow to create an engulfing environment.

.- This January, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU will launch its spring programming, celebrating topics that include Afrofuturism and the concept of cyclical time.
Transfiguration: A Black Speculative Vision of Freedom
Since the debut of Marvels Black Panther (2018), the focus on Afrofuturism in the United States has skyrocketed. Mark Dery, American author, lecturer and cultural critic, defined the term in 1994 in an attempt to understand why African Americans did not engage with science fiction. Derys assertion that Black people have other stories to tell about culture, technology, and things to come can be seen in the vibrant visual culture linked to Black speculative art.

Branford, Connecticut (Newsfile Corp. - December 17, 2020) - Ginkgo Bioworks, Azitra, Inc., Florida International University (FIU), and Latham BioPharm Group (LBG) have been awarded a contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for up to $15M, as part of its ReVector program. This program aims to maintain the health of military personnel operating in regions highly affected by mosquito-borne diseases.
