State's Firewood Regulations Limit Firewood Movement to Protect New York Forests

State s Firewood Regulations Limit Firewood Movement to Protect New York Forests Written by NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation With the start of the 2021 camping season underway, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Erik Kulleseid today encouraged campers to use local firewood and follow New York State firewood regulations to help prevent the spread of invasive species. Untreated firewood - firewood that has not met the state s heat treatment standard - can contain invasive pests that kill trees. To protect New York s forests, untreated firewood should not be moved more than 50 miles from its source of origin.

Local Matters - Increased funding available for community weed control

Increased funding available for community weed control If invasive weeds are a problem in your neighbourhood, there is a bunch of funding to help tackle the problem – double the amount available last year. Local not-for-profit organisation Restore Hibiscus & Bays is on a mission to bring together, support and grow the network of community groups working in environmental conservation throughout the area. This includes obtaining funding, which it passes on to groups and individuals who want to carry out pest plant control in a place that is special to them. Last year a total of $20,000 funding was allocated to the region for small projects. It went to two projects locally – $2400 to support Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird’s Pest Free programme, and $3000 for a contractor to control invasive weeds in Fairhaven walkway.

Photo / 123F RNZ By Karoline Tuckey of RNZ Pet owners are increasingly bringing pet cats and dogs to pest-free islands, where they can wreak destruction on fragile native animals, the Department of Conservation says. In the Bay of Islands, ranger Helen Ough Dealy said dogs were often brought onto the protected islands, particularly during summer. But owners had also been caught walking their cats on leashes, and with cats on a paddle board.
