Fort Madison, IA- A fire damaged a Fort Madison home Saturday evening and left one pet dead. The Pen City Current reports that LeeComm was notified of a fire at 402 Avenue F after residents in the park noticed smoke and flames. Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the home and the back of the home on fire. One dog was able to escape the home, but another dog died in the fire. The homeowner was out of town at the time of the fire. Fort Madison Fire Chief Joey Herren said the fire remains under investigation.
Fort Madison, IA- Fort Madison City Manager David Varley has announced his resignation. The Pen City Current reports that Varley submitted his letter of resignation to Mayor Matt Mohrfeld on Tuesday. His resignation is effective May 2nd. Mohrfeld stated his appreciation for Varley's nine years of service to the city of Fort Madison. Fort Madison Mayor Pro Tem and city councilman Rusty Andrews said the council may look at different options regarding city leadership. Andrews said he hopes the council takes it's time to research the best way forward in searching for a replacement.
