good afternoon, everyone. to begin, i d like to say a few words about paul volker who as you know passed away earlier this week. paul volker served as federal reserve chair from 1979 to 1987. he accomplished many things during his long and distinguished career at the fed and elsewhere. he s best known for leading the fight to tame the double-digit inflation he inherited, laying the prosperity we enjoy today. but what is perhaps most admirable about him more than his accomplishments was his character. he believed that there was no higher calling than public service and he dedicated the lion s share of his life to it. with courage, tenacity and integrity he pursued the policies he believed would benefit all americans. my colleagues and i continue to draw inspiration from his example. turning to today s meeting, my colleagues and i decided to leave our rate unchanged after lowering it a total of 0.75%. we based our decisions on judgment of how best to achieve the goals congres

[laughter] once you finish reading it cancel your gym membership just to walk around carrying it measured against other biographies just on size alone but this isn t just a book it is a deep dive into what a presidency means written by someone who was there to see it all certainly i was there but still remembers far more details than i ever could because i was so excited to get the book and have this discussion in depth today. every time i saw him in the white house over 40 years ago everywhere all the time 5000 pages of notes on a yellow pad and a presidential biography ever prepared by someone so well prepared. but i m not surprised. i met stu the summer of 1964 when we sat next to each other at the young democrats of america here in washington i won t reveal our ages then or now that he is older.
