is that there s just not a lot of people who can do that job. john bay nor couldn t do the job, paul ryan couldn t do the job. kevin mccarthy is going to try next. the larger issue is trying to govern a caucus that s ungovernable as we get the book, which is out tuesday. this is a party now which is just very difficult to contain, and trump obviously is a huge driver of that. there s also just such a difference between being house speaker, and being a powerful house speaker there s no telling right now whether he is for sure going to be able to continue you know, maintain the support that he seems to have now, become a house speaker eventually if republicans take the house. but there are real questions about what kind of power will he have as the leader of the conference. he s going to be potentially more be-holden to donald trump, than he has been in the past. he might also feel like he owes certain things to members of his own conference. and then i think, not to be, you
a staffer and as a member. paul ryan is a walking congressional research service report. a very wonk-ish, into the levers and buttons of how the policy works in washington. and that is not how donald trump works. so for paul ryan to say trump doesn t know anything about washington, that is why he was sent here. people in motorcycle voted h voted for him and the president, i know, for a fact, was very disappointed that paul ryan couldn t get the health care plan done. that was one of the first things out of the block. needed to get done and they would deliver, couldn t count the votes and they failed miserably. the president undermined them. but the point is they said we ll deliver this and we got this done, please send it done and we have it teed up and then they couldn t do it and you see the president compliments nancy pelosi for holding her caucus together and keeping people disciplined and he said numerous times that paul ryan could never
in the last hour, i ve watched the segment with evangelicals who voted for trump who say they believe he exceeded their expectations but don t like how he behaves. they referenced what he said, i.e., the racial slurs in the oval office last week. but if president trump swoops in, gets this done tomorrow, they will be able to say, all that is just words. he s a guy who means business and can get things done. he ll tip his hat and say, i got done what mitch mcconnell and paul ryan couldn t. he ll leave washington and be in mar-a-lago by saturday night. the problem is, having covered a couple government shutdowns, the last-minute things always go to the 11th hour. the last two went beyond the 11th hour. there s a lot of logistics. look, i would take the bet, except i don t want to be on the i don t want to bet on a government shutdown. i think it is a serious matter. let me tell you why. very serious. a lot of people don t care because they don t really know
directly or indirectly. the white house, i ve asked for a comment about, you know, who will pay for this and which account should we believe. no response yet. i spoke with someone close to the president who makes the point that, steph, you made, that the president believes that this was really his chief campaign promise. it was the thing that got the biggest applause, the biggest reaction on the stump. you saw him say it in the montage four or five times at least. and the president views that if there is any deal to be had about immigration or daca, if democrats get what they want, that he has to get something on this wall. he has to get something that he can define as a win, either national security or about this southern border wall. so that is really why it counts for the president s stated obsession with this wall, steph. couldn t the president already run somewhat of a victory lap? you ve seen border security significantly tighten up, even in the last year. probably due to fear
