progress i have say one thing wrong with america is that rich people keep too much pie. they cheat the middle class and poor out of their fair share. the rich sure can take home lots of pie. but does that really hurt the poor? if this represent the will of america progressive would say the rich take so much. the poor just get a sliver. after all the mavie wall street says. zero some gain somebody wins somebody loses. money itself isn t lost or made it s simply transferred. reporter: that s a mistake a lot of people make. congressman ryan. government job to divide up slice of the pie versus having society that grows the pie. reporter: society that grows the pie. what a concept. and in fact that s how it worked for the free society because item not a
people show up and beg. does work and does pay off. people who are connected get the goodies. exactly right. that s what happens m big government society. reporter: people like getting free stuff. i think more and more people in america are beginning to wake up to the fact that this thing is coming unglue. reporter: his opponent can truthfully say they are upset about government spending. stop spending so much. that s something you tell the republicans. reporter: democratic congressman andrews is a friend of paul ryan. president reeing and and both bush spent more than either president clinton and obama. i agree with. that but to assign responsibility to the democrat of this problem is not actually accurate. reporter: it s true in the past government has grown just as much sometimes more under republicans. these day it s the democrats who are most eager to spend. [applause] do you ever think government is doing too much?
percent. political class always claims they need more. many people are hurting. help american steel workers. average 20 to 30 meetings a day in my office and 20 to 30 meetings are people asking for something from the government. reporter: when paul rooib ryan first elected he was an unusual congressman. you are telling your colleagues stay out. don t do anything. yes. in many of these cases, yes. reporter: the last election suddenly gave him colleagues who agreed with that. tonight there s a tea party tidal wave and we are sending a message to them. reporter: but will they still want to cut the size of government won they spend more time in washington? congress listens to testimony all day. and more than 90 percent of it comes from people asking. i propose congress pass legislation. i propose that congress. reporter: there s a reason
