Former Castel Malawi employees disappointed with compnay's no show at Industrial Relations Court | Malawi Nyasa Times

April 12, 2021 Watipaso Mzungu – Nyasa Times 1 Comment Disgruntled retrenched employees of Castel Malawi Limited (CML) have expressed disappointment over the failure by their former employer to show up at the Industrial Relations Court (IRC) on Friday last week. Castel Malawi Lilongwe Plant staff  Between 2019 and 202, CML laid off close to 300 workers due to what the company termed as ‘harsh economic climate change compounded by illegal entry of foreign beers into Malawi’. The company’s senior manager, Godwin Ng’oma, said then that the company was continuously posting losses; hence, the decision by the management to retrench some of its members of staff to keep the brewer afloat.

Fired employees sue Castel Malawi for unfair dismissal, misrepresentation

January 3, 2021 Watipaso Mzungu – Nyasa Times 1 Comment Recently retrenched employees of Castel Malawi Limited (CML) have dragged the brewer to the Industrial Relations Court (IRC) over what they have described as misrepresentation and unfair dismissal. Castel Malawi Limited has been retrenching staff The disgruntled former employees are being led by Purity Paschal Chitalo. Through IRC statement of claim dated 4 November 2020, Chitalo and 28 others are also accusing their former employer of failing to consult them before effecting a retrenchment. CML is one of the companies that effected massive retrenchments between 2019 and 2020 due to the volatile economic situations. In May 2019, Castel Malawi Limited (CML) announced its intention to lay off about 300 workers due to the harsh economic climate compounded by illegal entry of foreign beers into Malawi.
