In addition to providing a safe place for humans and predators to meet, they also serve as centers for animal research. However, one of their primary functions is to preserve animal species in danger of extinction.
Historic zoos or menageries were privately owned and existed primarily to charge admission for the public to view exotic animals or to see trained animals perform tricks or feats outside the ordinary. Often these places were unregulated, and many became sites of animal cruelty and profiteering.
