The bylaw can be renewed in response to the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis.
Until Wednesday’s council meeting, the bylaw was scheduled to expire on April 29. An earlier renewal was authorized in January.
Council OKs environment committee position on nuclear waste facility
Council unanimously accepted a position recommended by its environment committee on a proposed nuclear waste disposal facility at Chalk River, about 200 kilometres northwest of Ottawa.
With the vote, the city isn’t joining several other municipalities in opposing the project by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), which is planning a disposal facility for “low-level” nuclear waste at a site roughly one kilometre from the Ottawa River.
