the rubble. well, we hope that saturday may 7th so far has been good to you. i know it s early, but we re grateful you re waking up with us. you, too, alex. thank you for having me. so great to be back with you. always. we will begin with the stalled efforts to free more civilians from that battered steel plant that has come under attack by russian forces in the city of mariupol. right. evacuations were supposed to resume today after 50 civilians were freed from the plant in mariupol yesterday. so far there are no signs that process has restarted. we know at least 100 civilians, including a number of children by the way, are still trapped in underground bunkers. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy has accused russia of using blockades as a form of torture, he says, because people are being starved. zelenskyy says organizations are not being allowed to get into mariupol to get the people there badly-needed food, water and countless other supplies. and presi
decision to carry out the strike. so how will russia respond to all of this? we ll ask pentagon press secretary john kirby when he joins us live. and in the southeastern ukrainian city of mariupol this morning [ she wlling ] that is shelling of the azovstal steel plant it is believed 200 civilians are sheltering there at the plant. women, children and wounded soldiers. at this moment the next stage of evacuations are underway. the united nations is hoping that a joint effort with the international red cross would be able to get more people out of that plant today. a medic on the inside says that people are dying in agony. bullets, hunger and a lack of medicine. now elsewhere, the pentagon is saying the russian forces made some small progress in parts of the eastern donbas region, but clearly not as much as the kremlin expected and hoped by this stage. let s bring in analyst kimberly dozer and former special forces operator mark hayward. he just returned home after vol
including president biden, will hold a virtual meeting with ukraine s president zelenskyy on sunday just before the key date of may 9th, which is victory day in russia. let s begin with sarah sidener. what can you tell us about the operation in mariupol? reporter: a third and fresh rescue is under way to try to get to the people still trapped in the dark, dank maze under the steel plant. the problem is the bombardments are continuing, even after russia said there would be a cease-fire to allow people to exit. russia has once again lied about what it is going to do. in the meantime, there are bloody battles being waged and some of them are inside the plant because a commander said russian forces have made it inside that plant and there is fierce fighting that continues to go on. this is all happening as people watch and wait for may 9th and that is when russia celebrates v-day. they believe that there is a real effort from russia to try and crush mariupol, to try and take it
same category as roe v wade. i don t know where the truth lies on this. same thing people said about roe, that it would never be over turned. thank you. welcome back. this is don letmon on anothr night of major developments. we ll tell you about it. first up anger is spilling ut over the supreme court draft opinion that would over turn roe v wade after nearly 50 years of law of the land. you re looking at live pictures there. really. you think the whole issue is about a leak? this is about five extremist justice on the united states supreme court who, at least, two of them, swore up and down they cared about the rule of law and that roe v wade was well settled law and now they are just turning around and saying not really. it s a stunning reversal in american history that the court would take away a constitutional right after 50 years. i think about what would have happened had i not had the ability to have an abortion. what would have happened to me. what would hav
