good morning or evening, depending on where you are joining us frumpy welcome to msnbc s coverage of the final night of the republican national convention. i am alicia menendez with alex anderson and michael steele. tonight, trump made a meandering speech filled with lies that struck two very different tones. one that is a softer side that came out when the ex-president read verbatim office teleprompter and made statements we know that he does not believe, like when he said we should not criminalize political disagreements, despite frequent promises to jail his opponents. the other time was one that we all know well, the tone that immediately came back when trump went off script, like when he told the audience he was trying to buy their vote. while referencing his 2020 election loss, he said, quote, we are never going to let that happen again. we do not have the ability to place on for audience. do you want to do your interpretation of the speech? i stand before you this
terms of how strange so much of this week has been. not just in terms of what it has been like in terms of the proceedings, what it has been like in context, what this night means. tonight, the republican convention comes to its conclusion as the republican party presidential nominee gives his acceptance speech. he is given the acceptance speech, i think it cannot be overstated, he is giving the acceptance speech in truly unique, even bizarre circumstances. there is no nicer way to say this, he is a felon, recently convicted of 34 felony criminal charges, now awaiting sentences for those charges facing up to four years in prison. he is also under indictment in other jurisdictions, multi- count r.i.c.o. criminal indictment under georgia state law but multi- count federal criminal indictment in d.c. district court in washington. happily, for the nominee, just adding to the weirdness of it for the rest of us, at this moment, he is no longer facing multiple additional felony fede

first, we are going to talk about new bombshell reporting from a new book on donald trump s final weeks in office. this one is pretty crazy, because it s donald trump and members of his administration who were concerned he might spark a war in order to try and stay in office. we will get to that. we begin tonight with the california recall election. results are coming in very shortly. polls actually close a little later on this hour. we are going to get to exit polling information that we have available. we will get to that as well. this is actually the sixth time that gavin newsom was trying to be recalled. apparently, that is a theme on the right. of course, the other theme that they have been working on is the idea that they can t lose elections. when they lose elections, they actually still win. they win elections whether or not they actually are counted the winner in the results. we will talk about that tonight. i want to go ahead and bring in our panel. karen bass, a
