In June 1977, I left Seyðisfjörður, a town of 900 people at the end of a fjord on the east coast of Iceland. With Geoff Hunter, I hoped to kayak 1,500 miles, to circumnavigate the island. I looked up at the snow-covered mountains and felt a chill of apprehension.
After a grueling two-day journey, my wife Robin and I rested in the lobby of the beautiful Alvear Palace Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina … the starting point of our five week Patagonia expedition. The next several days were spent experiencing this thriving port-side capital defined by its rich history, vibrant culture and strong European influence — thus nicknamed the Paris of South America.
Lake Superior is an inland sea that is highly respected by mariners worldwide as a serious body of water for travel and navigation. A beautiful archipelago of 21 islands extends northeasterly from just off-shore near Bayfield, Wisc., to the outermost reach at the north tip of Devil’s Island.
