Remembering Charleroi 2000 - the worst England v Germany fixture of them all

Alan Shearer scored England s winner - but the joy was short-lived Credit: RUSSELL CHEYNE In the rich history of the England v Germany fixture, encompassing glory and despair, ignominy in 1938 and a kind of nobility in 1990 and 1996, one match has rather been forgotten, consigned to a secure trunk in the attic of popular memory, covered up on grounds of taste and dignity. That it should be England’s first and in fact only tournament victory over their old foes since 1966 makes its obscurity all the more peculiar. But the 1-0 win in Charleroi at Euro 2000 between two shamefully inadequate teams was so swiftly overshadowed by both sides’ elimination that any sense of triumph was promptly extinguished.

Jurgen Klinsmann interview: 'Harry Maguire is like a Mustang. He runs through everybody'

15 When Germany lined up against the Czech Republic in the final of Euro ’96, I wasn’t bothered about the result. I just had my eyes on one man: Jurgen Klinsmann. I had scored five goals in the tournament, but Jurgen was on three: if he had the game he was capable of, he could have added snatching the Golden Boot away from me to the heartbreak England had already suffered that summer. Fortunately, Olivier Bierhoff scored Germany’s goals that day, and I stayed top scorer. It meant I got the booby prize while Jurgen got the bigger one of a winner’s medal. I was happy with my Golden Boot but I would definitely have swapped with him.
