New season of Oklahoma Gardening returns

STILLWATER – Green-thumbed Oklahomans don’t have to wait for good weather to jump into a new season of Oklahoma Gardening, which kicked off again Feb. 13.
Oklahoma Gardening airs every Saturday morning at 11 a.m. and Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. on local OETA-TV (PBS) channels across the state. Viewers who are unable to watch on television can subscribe to the Oklahoma Gardening YouTube channel and see full shows or search for specific segments at their convenience.
Casey Hentges, host of the longest-running gardening show on television, said the 47th season will introduce viewers to new topics and revisit some old favorites.
With proper care, poinsettias can add color to home décor throughout the holiday season. Consumer horticulturist provides selection and care tips.
Although Christmas trees take center stage when it comes to holiday decorations, poinsettias should not be overlooked. These beautiful holiday plants are more than just another red highlight – varieties include yellow, blue and orange – and they can brighten homes throughout the season.
Check local nurseries and the gardening section of home improvement stores for a large selection of poinsettias, said David Hillock, Oklahoma State University Extension consumer horticulturist.
“When shopping for a poinsettia, select a plant with well-expanded, well-colored bracts. The foliage on the plant should be medium to dark green with uniform coloring and there should be flowers in the center,” Hillock said. “While still fairly delicate, poinsettias are more durable today than in previous years.”
