South Island's biggest, most remote Waitangi Day event supports struggling museum

CHRIS SKELTON/STUFF Hundreds gathered to celebrate Waitangi Day at Okains Bay in Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, in 2020. The museum relied solely on fundraising, so its biggest event – Waitangi Day – had become even more vital. “It’s important to us that it’s a success from that perspective, but also to cement our relationship with mana whenua. “We want the museum to be able to be open in future.” The museum has more than 20,000 pieces on display, focusing on Māori and colonial collections with a link to Banks Peninsula. “What is unique, apart from the location is it has the largest and most significant collection of taonga Māori.”
