It can take a big push to make a drastic change. And when it comes to peopleâs work lives, there has been perhaps no greater disruptor than the COVID-19 pandemic. Many got laid off, or were suddenly allowed to do their jobs from anywhere. Some got sick, while countless others worried about their safety.

Caroline Thompson landed a new job as a social media manager last June and has yet to leave her bedroom. Sheâs never made the commute to Waltham in the car she bought for that purpose. Sheâs never been to the office at all, in fact, and has met only one of her co-workers in person â after recognizing the building outside his window during a Zoom call and realizing he lived in her neighborhood.
