While school districts were closed down this time a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, food service workers throughout northeast Indiana continued to perform their jobs above and beyond anything they ever dreamed possible.
âIt was a learning curve that changed rapidly and frequently,â said Stephanie Haynes-Clifford, food service director for the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County.
âI think they responded absolutely wonderful,â she said. âFood service professionals are in these buildings every day feeding these children because they care about them and they want to know theyâre taken care of.
âTheyâre obviously not in it because of the money, and in these unprecedented times, they were willing to step up and do what was necessary to continue to feed their children.â
LIGONIER â West Noble School Corporation will apply for a Common School Loan to upgrade its technology. School board members agreed to the application at Mondayâs meeting.
Technology director Mike Burke said that three phases of infrastructure improvements will happen if the loan application is approved. An aging main server in the data center will be replaced at an estimated cost of $59,000; 70 desktop computers at West Noble Middle School will be replaced at an estimated cost of $913 each; and new Chromebooks with licensing fees will be purchased for all 180 teachers at an estimated Cost of $80,000.
Schools may apply for a Common School Loan twice a year, and may receive funds equal to $100 per student. There is no guarantee that the districtâs application would be approved. Superintendent Galen Mast said West Noble has received a Common School Loan twice.
KENDALLVILLE â East Noble is polling elementary school families on whether theyâd be interested in a summer school program to help students who may need a little extra instruction due to the pandemicâs impact.
District elementary schools posted callouts this week asking parents if theyâd be interested in a half-day, morning program in June for students.
âEast Noble School Corporation is exploring the option of an elementary summer school program in June to help address the learning gap created by COVID 19,â the social media posts state. âBased on the level of interest at each building, we will determine if enough students are interested in participating in order to host a summer school program.â
