Education secretary nominee Miguel Cardona led a full-court press for schools to reopen in Connecticut

Education secretary nominee Miguel Cardona led a full-court press for schools to reopen in Connecticut Laura Meckler and Nick Anderson, The Washington Post Feb. 2, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail Miguel Cardona is shown in Wilmington, Del., on Dec. 23, 2020.Photo for The Washington Post by Sarah Silbiger Last summer, as school districts across America were nervously considering whether to pry open the school doors for part-time learning, Miguel Cardona was in Connecticut, pushing districts hard to return five days a week. Through a combination of pressure and cajoling, along with an open line of communication, Cardona saw all but one school district in his state adopt some flavor of in-person education in the fall, reopening school buildings even as teachers across Connecticut staged noisy protests and districts across the country remained online only.

Connecticut educators denounce right-wing record of Biden's pick for Education Secretary

Connecticut educators denounce right-wing record of Biden’s pick for Education Secretary Miguel A. Cardona [Credit: Connecticut State Colleges & Universities] In the eyes of the Democratic Party and all of its backers, Cardona’s two chief qualifications for the position are that he is Latino and that he has forcefully advocated the reopening of schools during the pandemic as Connecticut’s commissioner of education. If Biden takes office in January, Cardona will immediately promote racial politics to accelerate the school reopening policies pursued by the Trump administration, fraudulently claiming this will be for the benefit of “black and brown” students.

Teachers Blast Biden's Education Secretary Pick Miguel Cardona: 'A Slap in the Face'

Teachers Blast Biden s Education Secretary Pick Miguel Cardona: A Slap in the Face On 12/22/20 at 6:06 PM EST President-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate Miguel Cardona, Connecticut s education commissioner, to serve as his education secretary, but teachers across the nation say they re disappointed in his selection. While his nomination has been met with praise by education groups like the American Federation of Teachers, the National School Boards Association and the National Education Association, some classroom teachers disagree. Alexis Salt, an English teacher in Nevada s Clark County School District, called the appointment a slap in the face. The big issue is that he s not a teacher. He s somebody who taught for a short amount of time on his way to becoming an administrator, which is not in and of itself a bad thing, Salt told
