UMBC’s Nick Dupuis ended the longest game in school history, propelling the Retrievers past Stony Brook, 13-12, in quadruple-overtime Saturday. The win was UMBC’s second-straight OT win and moves them to 2-0 (1-0 America East). Both goalies shined in the extra periods with multiple saves, weathering man-down attempts and scoring chances. UMBC senior goalie Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made 16 saves, including a game-saving one at the end of the third OT. Stony Brook’s Anthony Palma made two big saves in the third for 12 total. For Dupuis’ third and game-deciding goal came on EMO, when he started at X, got to GLE, faked and buried low just before taking a hit. ....
Welcome to March. There’s no turning back now. Blowout Saturday featured a ton of one-sided affairs. We witnessed some Week Two results that didn’t correlate to Week One performance. Teams improve a great deal after their initial outing. March is about improvement. Strive to get better this week as a team, as a unit and as an individual. Same-day bus rides and empty bleachers conspire to snuff your spark. The fire burns from within, take a moment to connect with your why. Early in the year, this poll is more art than science or math. I try not to look at the other polls. Instead, preferring to watch games and talk to coaches. Film don’t lie. Groupthink is never profitable. ....

John Picker/The Georgetown Voice In their home opener, the Georgetown Hoyas men’s lacrosse team (2-0, 2-0 Big East) overwhelmed the St. John’s Red Storm (1-3, 0-2 Big East) by a score of 19-1. Coming off a 16-1 victory against Villanova, the Hoyas managed to one up themselves and deliver a knockout effort. Graduate transfer Nicky Petkevich led the home squad with 4 goals and 1 assist, while star fifth year attackman Jake Carraway continued his fast start to the season with 6 total points (3 goals, 3 assists). Fifth year senior Mike Madsen recorded the Red Storm’s sole tally on the day. ....

Georgetown’s long-awaited season opener was three days away last week when Hoyas coach Kevin Warne and assistant Michael Phipps discussed a scary reality. As encouraged as they were by their team’s effort in the preseason, they had no idea what to expect when Georgetown visited Villanova. “There’s no fall ball,” Warne said. “You usually get a feeling when you go through the scrimmage process, ‘OK, we need to do this and do that.’ It really is like high school where you get up and play. I thought it was actually neat to be in that type of setting. We told the guys, ‘You didn’t forget how to play lacrosse. You just weren’t together.’ It’s not like we were starting over.” ....
