The four-year legal battle to determine whether Crestwood has to continue paying the Affton Fire Protection District for fire service for annexed residents is over after the Missouri Supreme Court ruled for Affton.
The Supreme Court took a year and a half to issue a ruling in the case after hearing oral arguments in late 2019, but an April 20 ruling from the entire court written by Justice Patricia Breckenridge sided with Affton on every legal argument, just as a Cole County circuit judge originally did in the case.
Since Crestwood lost its bid in court, the city will continue to pay more than $500,000 a year to the AFPD, out of a roughly $13 million budget. And the payments will never stop: In the words spoken to the Supreme Court by Crestwood’s own attorney, former Missouri Chief Justice Ray Price of Armstrong Teasdale, the city will be “saddled for the rest of time” with those payments.
A four-alarm chemical fire that sent mushroom clouds of smoke over Affton and forced evacuations of residents Thursday afternoon was something Affton fire officials had long dreaded, but the blaze was fully contained within hours and residents could return to their houses by Thursday evening.

AFFTON, Mo. The fire burning at a chemical plant in Affton was extinguished Thursday evening after multiple explosions at the plant.
Lt. Matt Coppin with the Metro West Fire Protection District said there were multiple explosions at the Manor Chemical Plant at around 2:30 Thursday. He said a tanker truck, about 10 containers and the chemical plant building were all on fire when crews arrived.
First responders prioritized evacuations, so firefighters and police officers from nearby departments went door-to-door in the area, telling people to get out of their homes.
The St. Louis County Department of Public Health is planning to open two vaccine sites in South County and one in Eureka, in addition to the mass vaccination site set to open Wednesday in Ferguson.
The county announced Tuesday it is working with several regional fire/EMS districts to provide additional vaccine center locations on top of two already announced in North County.
Appointments for vaccines at Mehlville, Affton and Eureka fire districts will begin this Thursday, Feb. 4, from the preregistration list the county has. The county said as of Tuesday it is still working with more fire/EMS partners to stand up additional local sites around the county.
