Dbacks in the AZL When the Diamondbacks were granted their franchise in 1995 it was with the understanding they would begin play in the National League (originally American) in 1998. That was not true however for their minor league system. They were allowed to field affiliates and participate in the Rule IV amateur draft beginning in 1996. In 1996 and 1997 both the Dbacks and their expansion brothers the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays participated in the draft with no limits. Then a 50 round process the Dbacks drafted 62 players in ’96 (signing 39) and 59 players in ’97 (signing 43). Some of the more notable signings from these classes were Junior Spivey,
