A day after the arrest of two people, including the founder and Editor-in-Chief of NewsClick, Prabir Purkayastha and Human Resources Head Amit Chakravarty were sent to seven days of police remand on Wednesday.
Notably, the counsel for Puryakastha also told the Court that a petition will be filed in Delhi High Court challenging the FIR and the arrest of both persons.
Express View: While the case related to NewsClick’s funding must take its course, it must do so by giving primacy to due process. The state should not wrest more power to circumvent restraints under a stringent law that, in this matter, is clearly uncalled-for
NewsClick and its journalists have been targeted in a case filed under UAPA. The case comes after a New York Times report alleged that the website received funds from an American millionaire who has been accused of funding Chinese propaganda.
