We really felt that the subfield had become unnecessary contentious that in the last decade and a half. Weve seen an outpouring of new and important work on veterans, but that a lot of the field have been kind of framed in a falsely dichotomous way right veterans were either maladjusted or they were well adjusted they were either civically engaged citizens, right . They were all over window homes extelling the snowy heights of honor or they were law number addicted veterans in an area soldiers homes, they were either waving their bloody shirt or clasping hands across the stone wall at gettysburg. And so we wanted to kind of move beyond this kind of falsely dichotomous debate that had been animating the field and really think about the complexity of the experience of surviving the us civil war t
