Protecting Plum Island from erosion - Dredging Today

Protecting Plum Island from erosion March 10, 2021, by Eldin Ganic The Town of Newbury Selectboard voted earlier this week in support of a sand replenishment project that would protect Plum Island from erosion, The Daily News reports.  The project, which involves using sand dredged from the Merrimack and Piscataqua rivers, was among several issues the board reviewed at its meeting via Zoom. The only board member to oppose the project was  Geraldine Heavey, who said that she was concerned about its cost to the town. “I don’t want to pay half a million dollars for sand,” Heavey said. At the meeting, Chair JR Colby and fellow board member Geoffrey Walker explained that the main goal of this project is to protect the Newbury side of Plum Island.

Valley News - Town Meeting preview: Newbury, Vt., assessing a property assessor

Town Meeting preview: Newbury, Vt., assessing a property assessor Modified: 2/5/2021 9:59:57 PM Hot topic: After talking about it for a few years, Newbury, Vt., officials are asking voters to replace the elected board of listers with a professional property assessor. Longtime Newbury Selectboard member Alma Roystan said the job of assessing property has become increasingly complex and that the town would benefit from the expertise a professional could provide. It’s unclear whether this would cost more money. “We would hope that it would be pretty close to a wash, or less,” Roystan said. Budget: The town budgets are the same as those approved by voters last year, with the Selectboard proposing to spend $640,350 through the general fund, and $780,000 through the highway fund. The tax rate likely won’t change much. “Depends on what the grand list is,” Roystan said.
