Jewish community 'on the ground' with humanitarian support for asylum seekers | Community

As the number of asylum seekers at Arizona’s southern border increases, so too does the number of buses dropping off migrants at International Rescue Committee community shelters in Phoenix. Every day this year, between 75 and 150 asylum seekers have arrived in the Phoenix area, according to Stanford Prescott, community engagement coordinator for IRC in Arizona. These arrivals have already gone through some initial processing with federal immigration officials and have been granted the opportunity to have their case heard before a judge. But they are on their own while they wait. Often, they don’t even know where they are when they get off the bus, Prescott said, and must find a way to travel to friends or family while they await a court hearing.

List of local synagogues with in-person services grows

Suzanne Treviño has been watching Friday evening services online since Congregation Beth Israel stopped offering in-person services due to COVID-19. “We’ve watched probably 90% of Shabbat services in the past year,” she said, “but it’s just not the same.” Treviño, her husband and two kids have “desperately missed” the connection and community of in-person Shabbat services. Her 14-year-old daughter Kayla Treviño likes to sing with CBI Cantor Seth Ettinger. “They often will do duets, and missing that music with the two of them together has been sad,” Suzanne Treviño said. Kayla and Ettinger will be able to sing together again Friday, March 19, when CBI welcomes community members once again for in-person services.

Fascinating Interpretations of Groundhog Day

In the nearly 30 years since Groundhog Day’s original release, fans have spent plenty of time and precious web bandwidth attempting to decode the alleged layers that exist just below the surface. Groundhog Day as metaphor? These eight theories say yes. 1. Bill Murray is our savior. Columbia Pictures Among the first groups to embrace the message of Groundhog Day were Buddhists, who were moved by its story of rebirth. As part of a talk at New York City’s Hudson Union Society in 2009, director Harold Ramis spoke about the many people who had been moved by the film including his Zen Buddhist mother-in-law.
