Laila Mach: New Paltz sophomore s American Idol run ends
The 16-year-old New Paltz High School sophomore s stint on American Idol came to an end Monday.
Despite wowing the judges on the singing competition television show during her previous performances and progressing through Hollywood week and duets, Mach s rendition of Alicia Keys If I Ain t Got You was her final performance. Mach did not make it to the ABC show s top 24, Monday s Showstopper/Final Judgement episode revealed.
At her audition, Idol judge Katy Perry told Mach she has exactly what it takes to be in this competition and go far, while Lionel Richie applauded her for performing her original song Drive off a Bridge.

Mach has “exactly what it takes to be in this competition, and go far,” according to Katy Perry, one of three celebrity judges on the singing competition reality show this season.
Mach performed an original song titled “Drive off a Bridge,” which was inspired by Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope,” a single released by the third-place contestant on Season 16 of the show.
“It’s kind of a more angrier version of her song,” Mach said.
Mach is a vocalist, plays the piano and guitar and writes her own songs, according to a post made by the New Paltz Arts in the Schools on Facebook, sharing her accomplishments. She is also a member of the high school’s choir and advanced a capella choir.

American Idol released its first trailer for this year s season back in January, and although we didn t get to hear any of her audition during the one-minute clip, New Paltz teenager Laila Mach made an appearance (at 0:51) as she showed her family her golden ticket to Hollywood. I m thrilled that I will be on the show this season, the high school sophomore told the New Paltz Arts in the School Association. I m so glad I have never given up on my goals, even when I ve been told no in the past. I m looking forward to all good things ahead!
