Police: Teen killed in crash on Route 140 off ramp in New Bedford

Updated: 4:14 PM EDT Apr 25, 2021 The Massachusetts State Police is investigating whether another vehicle was involved in a crash in New Bedford that left a 19-year-old man dead.State police say they responded shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday to a report of a car into the woods next to the off ramp from Route 140 north to Braley Road, which is Exit 7. New Bedford firefighters and emergency medical services personnel also responded to the scene.First responders found a 2019 Kia Optima sedan with a Massachusetts license plate that had crashed off the ramp, struck a metal post and partially hit a tree into the woods.According to state police, three bystanders were providing medical aid to the victim, who was from New Bedford.The victim was taken to St. Luke s Hospital in New Bedford, where he was pronounced dead later in the morning.State police say evidence from the crash scene indicates the victim was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.Investigators, however, are st

Care center for those recovering from COVID-19 opens in New Bedford Share Updated: 11:02 AM EST Jan 19, 2021 Buttonwood SOURCE: Buttonwood Share Updated: 11:02 AM EST Jan 19, 2021 A regional care center for those recovering from COVID-19 reopened in New Bedford.The former nursing home facility at 4586 Acushnet Ave. opened Monday as a coronavirus recovery and care center, Mayor Jon Mitchell announced.The facility is operated by Essex Group Management Corporation’s nonprofit Buttonwood Healthcare division.The site has 123 beds and will be staffed by physicians and advanced practice nurses.Earlier this month, Mitchell announced the city’s decision to reopen the facility to assist the region’s health care system with the recent surge of COVID-19 patients. The facility will house patients who still require medical care, but do not require hospitalization, to ease the burden on local hospitals.
