We are writing to express our concern about the resumption of forcible returns of North Koreans detained in the People’s Republic of China to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea), which had stopped since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
We are writing on behalf of 28 non-governmental organizations and coalitions, and four individuals from 6 different countries to urge your government to engage fully with the international community, and act in response to the dire human rights situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) by resuming South Korea’s co-sponsorship of the annual resolution on the matter at the 49th UN Human Rights Council.
On behalf of the 30 signatory organizations to this letter, we are writing to urge you to immediately pass a comprehensive antidiscrimination law in the Republic of Korea (South Korea), which would meaningfully address pervasive discrimination against marginalized groups in the country.
It is critical that the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly intensify their scrutiny of the appalling human rights situation in North Korea. The plight of the people in the DPRK grows worse by the day. The international community needs to make clear to the DPRK leadership that those responsible for crimes against humanity and other grave human rights violations will someday be held accountable.
