The City of Yonkers announced earlier this week that it is taking over operations of the center after a report of apparent financial mismanagement at the center.
The news comes after a report from the City of Yonkers inspector general found the nonprofit mishandled grant money, failed to pay rent to the city, didn't make necessary building repairs and didn't fully pay some staffers.
Mayor Mike Spano pledges to keep the vital community hub alive after its IRS tax-exempt status and accreditation was revoked to disqualify the city-owned building from any grants.
The mayor said a September 2022 letter from the Barack Obama Foundation to the non-profit Nepperhan Community Center LLC concerned him and the city council.
