It will be recalled that Okala apart from being a member of the victorious 1980 Green Eagles was the first Nigeria to win the African Footballer of the Year award in 1978.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday, joined sports-loving Nigerians to celebrate the renowned goalkeeper, Emmanuel Okala, as he clocks 70 years.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled, ‘President Buhari hails heroic goalie, Emmanuel Okala, at 70’.
The statement read, “As a goalkeeper for the senior national football team in his prime, President Buhari recalls that Okala represented the best of Nigerian talent and dexterity.
