Organized labour - US, Canada, Unions

Organized labour - US, Canada, Unions: Trade unionism in North America had its beginnings in a transition during the late 18th century from a mutualist/dependent to a free wage-labour system. As journeymen artisans moved out of what has been called “economic clientage” to master craftsmen, they found their interests in conflict with those of their employers. Only through collective effort could workers enforce the list of “prices” they established for their work and defend their trades against cheap and diluted labour. The first identifiable labour strike dates from 1768, when journeymen tailors in New York City stopped work to resist a pay cut. Sustained labour organization

Union Printers Home near Memorial Park sells to new owners who aim to preserve and revitalize the landmark

A group of local investors recently bought the Union Printers Home near Memorial Park for $18.5 million to revitalize and preserve the property.  Seven local families bought the 26-acre campus at 101 South Union Boulevard at the end of June and expect to renovate the buildings, although they have not settled on a development plan for the property yet, said Susan Pattee, a member of the ownership group. Pattee s mother, Kathy Loo, a former Colorado Springs city councilmember and philanthropist, and her brother, James Loo, are also part of the group, along with the O Neil Group and All Pro Capital, both local companies, she said. The group bought the property as UPH Partners.
