Govt. cites Cyclone Yaas as reason
The State government on Monday informed the Madras High Court that it had sought the urgent supply of oxygen from western States, since the allocation of 146 tonnes to Tamil Nadu from the eastern corridor (primarily Odisha) may get affected by Cyclone Yaas.
The court was told that Maharashtra had agreed to supply 60 tonnes of oxygen a day for 12 days, beginning Monday.
Appearing before Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, Advocate-General R. Shunmugasundaram said the Centre had increased the allocation of oxygen for Tamil Nadu under the National Oxygen Plan, from 519 to 650 tonnes, with effect from Tuesday. Of this, it had been stated that 146 tonnes would be supplied from the eastern corridor.

‘Procurement through global tenders is a long-drawn process’
The Madras High Court on Thursday ordered that the Centre should not reduce the allocation of COVID-19 vaccines to Tamil Nadu just because the State government had decided to float global tenders to procure the vaccines, apart from the purchases being made from two domestic manufacturers. The court said the procurement through global tenders is a long-drawn process whereas the State is already facing a shortage of vaccines.
Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, however, made it clear that the Centre could appropriately rework the allocation of vaccines to Tamil Nadu as and when the global tenders mature and supplies are received.

Chennai: On May 2, as Tamil Nadu waited for the results of the assembly elections, patients of COVID-19 at Chengalpet Government Hospital (GH) began dying.
The relatives of those patients believed that something had gone terribly wrong, but were too dazed to question the doctors beyond a point. In any case, their focus was on the release of their relativesâ bodies, a procedure that took much of the day.
