澎湖廟宇密度高居全國之冠，主要是先民與大海搏命求生，對於宗教信仰的依賴性，高於其他縣市。而廟宇除了提供心靈平安外，也蘊含先民文化及歷史紀錄，澎湖縣政府文化局特推出系列廟宇匾額之旅，率先介紹觀音亭薄海蒙庥匾。主祀南海觀世音菩薩的馬公觀音亭，居民習稱「觀音廟」。現在是澎湖國際海上花火節施放及風帆船訓練主場地，成為親水環境及遊憩設施園區。但在3、4百年前，「觀音亭」具有濃厚的官方意味。清代以觀世音菩薩及關帝君信仰，取代明朝官方信仰玄天上帝，並於康熙35（1696）年建立觀音亭及武廟，兩座廟宇當時皆由官方祭祀，因此觀音亭象徵了治理的正統性。
