In the eighteenth century, as a working tavern, the historic structure helped connect Ridgefield residents to people, information, and ideas from the New England region and beyond. Learn about how taverns were an essential part of every Connecticut town – including Ridgefield – on Tuesday, March 16, as Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center hosts educators from Connecticut Historical Society (CHS) on Zoom. CHS’s Natalie Belanger, Adult Programs Manager, and Taylor McClure, Museum Educator will explain how, in early Connecticut, taverns were more than just a place to drink. Travelers and locals alike saw taverns as a place to be entertained, spread news and gossip, have a good meal, and get a night s lodging.

Natalie Belanger looks at photos, letters, and pamphlets from Connecticut Historical Society s collection to understand one of the most hard-fought political battles of American history. You ll learn about suffragists like Katharine Houghton Hepburn, Mary Townsend Seymour, and Isabella Beecher Hooker, as well as Connecticut women who fought tooth-and-nail against women getting the vote. Natalie Belanger will present the program via Zoom. Belanger is the Adult Programs Manager at the Connecticut Historical Society. She holds a B.A. in history from Smith College and an M.A. in women s history from the University of Maryland.
