Cotton trials provide producers valuable information

New planting season considerations underway
As cotton producers across the Texas High Plains begin preparing for a new season, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service specialists are providing up-to-date information on the performance results of commercially available varieties across the state during 2020 trials.
“Although 2020 was a tough year, variety results are still valuable when making 2021 decisions,” said Jourdan Bell, AgriLife Extension agronomist, Amarillo. “Our 2020 results provide producers an opportunity to evaluate variety stability across multiple management and production environments. By comparing variety performance across multiple locations and multiple years, producers are able to select stable varieties for their farms.” ....

Texas cotton farmers, Extension specialists to discuss soil health

Healthy Soils for Sustainable Cotton Farmer Showcase discusses cover crops, improving soil moisture and increasing soil organic matter levels.
Soil health and cotton production in Texas will take center stage Feb. 9, 2021, during the virtual Healthy Soils for Sustainable Cotton Farmer Showcase.
The event, sponsored by the Soil Health Institute, will feature discussions between two Texas producers and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension specialists about the challenges and benefits of adopting practices to improve soil health.
Topics to be covered include managing cover crops to minimize water use; improving soil moisture levels; and increasing soil organic matter levels. ....

Cotton Specialist Murilo Maeda, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Lubbock, received the 2021 Dr. J. Tom Cothren Outstanding Young Cotton Physiologist Award at the virtual Beltwide Cotton Conferences on Jan. 7, 2021. 
Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center Director Juan Landivar, Corpus Christi and Weslaco, presented the award, referring to Maeda as a family friend.  
Dr. Maeda satisfies the essence of this award with his work ethic, dedication, collaborative nature, and intellect, as well as his accomplishments,  Landivar said.  ....
