More trails reopen in Rocky Mountain National Park as area recovers from fire damage

Rocky Mountain National Park reopened more trails this week after the park was devastated by multiple wildfires nearly seven months ago. In October, RMNP fully closed for several weeks after it was hit by the Cameron Peak and East Troublesome fires. About 30,000 acres, or 9% of the park, burned in the fires. Since then, more than 50% of the park has reopened. On the east side of the park, the North Fork, North Boundary, Stormy Peaks, Mummy Pass and the Emmaline Lake trails reopened this week. Some, but not all, of the trails in the Upper Beaver Meadows area and most of the trails in the Moraine Park area have also reopened.

Popular trails in Cameron Peak Fire burn scar reopen for recreation

More trails closed by the Cameron Peak Fire reopened Friday after assessment work by U.S Forest Service staff and volunteers. Trails that reopened Friday include the North Fork, Stormy Peaks, Mummy Pass and Emmaline Lake trails as well as land around Alexander Mountain and the CSU Mountain Campus, the Canyon Lakes Ranger District stated in a news release. District staff and volunteers from Poudre Wilderness Volunteers and Cameron Peak Nordic Rangers continue to evaluate areas as the snow melts. More than 120 miles of trails and 350 miles of forest service roads are within the 325-mile perimeter of the fire. The largest wildfire in state history, believed to be human caused, was declared 100% contained Dec. 2, 112 days after it started. Much of the burn scar remains closed.

Rocky Mountain National Park reopens west-side entrance

264 Shares What was left of the Grand Lake entrance station office to Rocky Mountain National Park in the aftermath of the East Troublesome fire. (Provided by Rocky Mountain National Park) The Grand Lake entrance on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park and about 10 miles of U.S. 34 from the gate north to the Colorado River trailhead have reopened, ending a closure caused by the East Troublesome Fire in October. The current closure at the Colorado River trailhead is the normal west-side closure for Trail Ridge Road in the winter. Trail Ridge Road was closed for the season on the east side of the park at Many Parks Curve on Nov. 17. Trail Ridge tops out at 12,183 feet and becomes impassable in the winter due to heavy snowfall. It normally reopens around Memorial Day.
