Since 2021, districts have been applying for the California Community Schools Partnership Program grant, which focuses on utilizing community resources to improve student outcomes. Community schools have an enhanced focus on community engagement and development, health and social services and academics. In 2022, the California legislature expanded the program by increasing funds and guaranteeing the program runs until 2031.
Monterey Peninsula Unified School District is facing a tough financial situation as decreasing enrollment, reduced funding and a dire state budget deficit has left the district scrambling to ensure it will be fiscally solvent in the coming years, district Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh said.
“The previous agenda structure worked for us for several years, but we saw an opportunity for changes to refocus board meetings on students and the purpose of accomplishing this district’s business,” board president Jason Remynse said at Wednesday’s meeting.
“I am truly grateful for the trust and confidence you are placing in me to lead this district into a future full of promise and growth,” Sharon Ofek said in an emailed statement Thursday. “While there is undoubtedly a lot of work ahead, with challenges to address and successes to celebrate, I am eager and enthusiastic about the possibilities that lie before us. I am confident that together, we can navigate these issues, finding solutions through unity, encouragement and shared determination.”
