Pregame: TinCaps (23-30) vs. Lake County (29-25)
DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette
The TinCaps ended their series against the Great Lakes Loons last week in the most frustrating fashion imaginable: they lost five in a row and each of the last four games in that stretch saw Fort Wayne cough up a lead in the sixth inning or later.
After that devastating stretch, the TinCaps have fallen a season-worst seven games below .500 and have equaled their longest losing streak of the season. The first time they lost five games in a row came against the team that opens a series at Parkview Field tonight: the Lake County Captains. By the end of the series, Fort Wayne will have reached the mid-point of the season. If it is going to make a move in the High-A Central standings, this would be a good time to start, especially after going 1-5 in the first leg of a 12-game homestand.

While the TinCaps were losing five games in a row against Great Lakes last week, manager Anthony Contreras repeatedly insisted that his team was playing good baseball and just not getting results. He said he liked the energy and intensity in those contests and what was needed was to finish games. That explanation made sense: the TinCaps had dropped four straight games in which they held a lead in the sixth inning or later.
Contreras was singing a different tune after Fort Wayne lost in the opener of a six-game series against Lake County 12-3 tonight, committing a pair of errors along the way and not looking competitive at any point beyond the first inning.

The TinCaps losing streak reached a season-high six games tonight as they fell 12-3 in the opener of a six-game series against Lake County at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne is a season-worst eight games below .500.
How it Happened
The game began poorly and got worse for the TinCaps. The Captains got going immediately, with left fielder Will Brennan lacing a line drive into the right-center gap for a leadoff double in the top of the first. A single put two on and by the end of the inning, two runs had scored against Fort Wayne starter Moises Lugo, putting Lake County in front early.
