A California woman has pleaded guilty to a hate crime after falsely accusing a black teenager of stealing her cell phone and attacking him at a New York hotel.
If she follows the terms, she will be allowed to lower her plea to a misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge. She could face up to four years in prison if she does not comply.
Miya Ponsetto, the so-called SoHo Karen, will avoid time behind bars if she successfully serves two years of probation without running into trouble with the law. In December 2020, she falsely accused a Black teen of stealing her phone.
