New Office for Environmental Protection appointments announced The Office for Environmental Protection will be created by the Environment Bill. The OEP will be a new, independent statutory body with the principal objective of contributing to environmental protection and the improvement of the natural environment. However, it will still be subject to approval from the NI Assembly. In December, Dame Glenys Stacey was selected as the Government’s preferred candidate to chair the OEP following a rigorous process in accordance with the Ministerial Governance Code on Public Appointments. Following a joint pre-appointment hearing she was formally appointed to the role, effective from February 1, 2021.

Reappointment to the Adaptation Committee of the Climate Change Committee Professor Michael Davies reappointed to the Adaptation Committee of the Climate Change Committee From: 1 February 2021 Defra and the Devolved Administrations have reappointed Professor Michael Davies to the Adaptation Committee of the Climate Change Committee. The Adaptation Committee is comprised of experts in the fields of climate change impacts, science, environmental economics, conservation, public health and business. It provides independent, expert advice on preparing for and adapting to climate change. Whilst this reappointment is not regulated by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments, it has been made in line with the guidance set out in the Ministerial Governance Code for Public Appointments. It will run from 1 February 2021.

New Chair appointed to Joint Nature Conservation Committee

Defra Ministers have appointed Professor Colin Galbraith as Chair of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee. Colin Galbraith’s appointment is for three years and will run from 25 January 2021 to 24 January 2024. Remuneration is £40,059 per annum based on a time commitment of 2.5 days per week. Professor Colin Galbraith is the Director of his own environmental consultancy, which deals with a range of environmental issues in the UK and at the global level. Colin has been Deputy Chairman of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) from 2017 and Independent member of the Committee since 2014. Until early 2010, Colin was the Director of Policy and Advice in Scottish Natural Heritage (now NatureScot). In this capacity he was the principal adviser on policy, scientific and technical matters for the organisation for over 12 years.
